What is Sodium Thiosulfate?
Sodium thiosulfate is a medication primarily used as an antidote for cyanide poisoning. Administered intravenously, it works by converting cyanide into thiocyanate, which is less toxic and excreted in urine. Additionally, sodium thiosulfate is utilized in the treatment of calciphylaxis in dialysis patients, and as a component of chemotherapy regimens for its protective properties against cisplatin toxicity.Side Effects
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
- Dry mouth, increased thirst, muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting
- Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness
Warnings
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, asthma, or a history of allergy to sulfites.
- Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.
