FDA-approved generic (Propecia)
Oral Finasteride
Daily tablet, 1 mg
The most-studied hair loss pill. Blocks DHT, the hormone that shrinks hair follicles, to stop loss and regrow hair for most men.
Compounded, not FDA-approved
Topical Finasteride + Minoxidil
Scalp spray, applied daily
Two proven ingredients in one spray: finasteride blocks DHT at the scalp while minoxidil wakes up follicles and thickens hair.
Off-label for hair loss
Low-Dose Oral Minoxidil
Daily low-dose tablet
A small daily dose of minoxidil by mouth. No scalp routine, and many people see more growth than with the topical.
Off-label for hair loss
Dutasteride
Daily capsule
A stronger DHT blocker than finasteride, sometimes prescribed when finasteride has not been enough.

What actually works for hair loss
Most hair loss in men, and much of it in women, is androgenetic alopecia: an inherited sensitivity to DHT that slowly shrinks hair follicles. It is common, it is gradual, and the earlier you treat it, the more hair you keep.
Two medicines have the strongest evidence. Finasteride lowers DHT to stop the loss, and minoxidil pushes follicles back into growth. Used together, they work better than either alone. Sudden, patchy or scarring hair loss is different and needs an in-person exam.
